The German Alpine Association (DAV) has considered a special campaign to people to the climate protection to motivate. Until the end of 2022, every member who travels publicly to an Alpine tour and that Auto leave at home, spend one night free of charge in a DAV hut. The 'Free Night for the Climate' is intended to draw attention to the main cause of greenhouse gas emissions that endanger the Alpine region. Mobility is a real problem in mountain sports, which the campaign now wants to draw attention to.
Steffen Reich, Head of the Department of Nature Conservation and Cartography at the DAV Federal Association, explains this as follows:
'If we arrive by public transport, we can do a lot to protect the climate and thus also to protect the Alps. And that's exactly what we want to motivate with the 'Free Night for the Climate' campaign.'The campaign was held for the first time in 2020. This year it was extended to the end of the year. A total of 50 huts are available to participants. The campaign is financed by money from the climate fund of the DAV and by the support of the DAV partner Globetrotter.
In addition to the condition of climate-neutral travel, you must be a member of the German Alpine Club. The promotion applies to an overnight stay in a dormitory or shared room in a hut. In addition, proof must be provided on arrival by ticket that at least 90 percent of the Travel was completed from the place of residence to the destination using public transport. A combo with an extra bicycle is recognized if a corresponding bicycle ticket has been purchased.
