After the enormous international success of Three posters in Ebbing, Missouri , Martin McDonagh goes back to origins (Irish and theatrical) with The spirits of the island , premiered at the Venice Film Festival. And for the occasion, the director reunites an exceptional couple: the star Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason (who was, among others, Professor Moody of Harry Potter). A dramatic story, but with dialogues full of humor, in which the chemistry of the two shines, already seen together in In Bruges by McDonagh himself. - Photo | video 1 | video 2 | video 3

Everything, absolutely everything, on the Venice Film Festival - special

THE SPIRITS OF THE ISLAND - We are in the early 1920s, on an island off the west coast of Ireland. While the civil war rages far away, a friendship ends, giving way to a silent and painful feud for the whole community. Padraic (Colin Farrell) is a quiet guy who looks after his cattle and spends time every day in the only pub in town. And that's where he met Colm's drinking buddy (Brendan Gleason), older and gloomy than him. It will be he who will interrupt all relationships with the youngest to pursue his passion for music: after a long time, the man has decided not to waste a moment on empty chatter. But this tear will have consequences for both of them and, unexpectedly, for the other characters around them.

HOW MANY SACRIFICES ARE WE WILLING TO MAKE? - It is Brendan Gleason, met at the Lido during the promotion of the film, who answers this question: “Colm is a character that some might define as selfish, but it is important to understand that his need is brutal, it is linked to his own survival. On the one hand, the artistic life, the attempt to leave a legacy to posterity, on the other hand, being a good person and a good friend '. Gleason jokingly admits it's a situation he found himself in: “I too was called selfish by my choice, my wife surely told me. Sacrifices are part of this work, they are part of an obsession, but on the other hand there is human suffering. And it is necessary to understand to what extent it is worth it ”.

Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu and the crisis of intellectuals (and cinema): 'Who knows where we will see the films, but it doesn't matter

THE DIRECTOR'S COMMENT - 'The atmosphere on the set was joyful. Obviously it was tiring, it's a job after all, but I tried to create an engaging place for the actors in the first place, but not only '. Another important protagonist of the film is the location where the film was shot: an island on the west coast of Ireland, a place dear to McDonagh himself: 'Choosing an island to set the story was fundamental: you can't escape and everything happens there, for better or for worse. I know that part of the country very well because it is where I grew up, I often went home during the shooting ”.
